York 2008: The Green Man, Gargoyles and Grotesques

Back To Summer Academy

York is a beautiful catherdral city in the North of England.

The Summer Study 2008 course The Green Man, Gargoyles and Grotesques was held there in mid August led by David Brandon.

Unlike any previous courses many of my photo's were, of course, specific items especially Green Men. Indeed we became Green Men spotters much like train spotters! Although I took over 1,000 photo's many were either duplicates because I feared my first, and sometimes second attempts, were not good enough. Most of the things we sought were inside churches were the lighting was often poor. I was very glad of the ease by which I could change the ISO setting on my new camera. Many of them were fairly small and were a long distance away in church roofs. So despite the Image Stabilisation built into my new camera's lens "camera shake" took its tool. So I shall try and keep the majority of our quarries to separate pages that the non-enthusiast can easily skip.

This my most ambitious coverage yet: 89 pages and 756 photographs. I hope you enjoy it.

There were only two full and one half day out plus one free afternoon. My car broke down the day before I was due to drive to York and I only got it back about 1 o'clock the next day. The weather being poor and time short I didn't stop anywhere on the way. Also the return trip was in poor weather so no stops on that either.

Places visited on the course included:

Churches: All Saints, North Street; All Saints, Pavement; St Helen's, St Helen's Square; Holy Trinity, Goodramgate; St Mary's, Castlegate; York Minster; Ripon Cathedral; St Mary the Virgin, Alne; Selby Abbey; St Mary's, Hemingborough; St Peter's, Howden; St Mary's, Beverley; Beverley Minster.

I also visited some parts of the York area during the free afternoon - and I found some Green Men too. Some pictures of the campus.
